1 Samuel 16

1 Samuel sent by God, under pretence of a sacrifice, cometh to Beth-lehem. 6 His human judgment is reproved. 13 He anointeth David. 19 Saul sendeth for David to quiet his evil spirit.

 16:1 ¶ And the LORD 3068 said 559 z8799 unto x413 Samuel, 8050 How long x5704 x4100 wilt thou x859 mourn 56 z8693 for x413 Saul, 7586 seeing I x589 have rejected 3988 z8804 him from reigning 4427 z8800 x4480 over x5921 Israel? 3478 fill 4390 z8761 thine horn 7161 with oil, 8081 and go, y3212 z8798 x1980 I will send 7971 z8799 thee to x413 Jesse 3448 the Bethlehemite: 1022 for x3588 I have provided 7200 z8804 me a king 4428 among his sons. 1121

 16:2 And Samuel 8050 said, 559 z8799 How x349 can I go? y3212 z8799 x1980 if Saul 7586 hear 8085 z8804 [it], he will kill 2026 z8804 me. And the LORD 3068 said, 559 z8799 Take 3947 z8799 an heifer 1241 5697 with x3027 thee, y3027 and say, 559 z8804 I am come 935 z8804 to sacrifice 2076 z8800 to the LORD. 3068

 16:3 And call 7121 z8804 Jesse 3448 to the sacrifice, 2077 and I x595 will shew 3045 z8686 thee x853 what x834 thou shalt do: 6213 z8799 and thou shalt anoint 4886 z8804 unto me [him] x853 whom x834 I name 559 z8799 unto x413 thee.

 16:4 And Samuel 8050 did 6213 z8799 x853 that which x834 the LORD 3068 spake, 1696 z8765 and came 935 z8799 to Bethlehem. 1035 And the elders 2205 of the town 5892 trembled 2729 z8799 at his coming, y7125 z8800 x7122 and said, 559 z8799 Comest 935 z8800 thou peaceably? 7965

 16:5 And he said, 559 z8799 Peaceably: 7965 I am come 935 z8804 to sacrifice 2076 z8800 unto the LORD: 3068 sanctify y6942 z8690 yourselves, x6942 and come 935 z8804 with x854 me to the sacrifice. 2077 And he sanctified 6942 z8762 x853 Jesse 3448 and his sons, 1121 and called 7121 z8799 them to the sacrifice. 2077

 16:6 ¶ And it came to pass, x1961 when they were come, 935 z8800 that he looked y7200 z8799 on x7200 x853 Eliab, 446 and said, 559 z8799 Surely x389 the LORD'S 3068 anointed 4899 [is] before x5048 him.

 16:7 But the LORD 3068 said 559 z8799 unto x413 Samuel, 8050 Look 5027 z8686 not x408 on x413 his countenance, 4758 or on x413 the height 1364 of his stature; 6967 because x3588 I have refused 3988 z8804 him: for x3588 [the LORD seeth] not x3808 as x834 man 120 seeth; 7200 z8799 for x3588 man 120 looketh 7200 z8799 on the outward appearance, 5869 but the LORD 3068 looketh 7200 z8799 on the heart. 3824

 16:8 Then Jesse 3448 called 7121 z8799 x413 Abinadab, 41 and made him pass 5674 z8686 before 6440 Samuel. 8050 And he said, 559 z8799 Neither x1571 x3808 hath the LORD 3068 chosen 977 z8804 this. x2088

 16:9 Then Jesse 3448 made Shammah 8048 to pass by. 5674 z8686 And he said, 559 z8799 Neither x1571 x3808 hath the LORD 3068 chosen 977 z8804 this. x2088

 16:10 Again, Jesse 3448 made seven 7651 of his sons 1121 to pass 5674 z8686 before 6440 Samuel. 8050 And Samuel 8050 said 559 z8799 unto x413 Jesse, 3448 The LORD 3068 hath not x3808 chosen 977 z8804 these. x428

 16:11 And Samuel 8050 said 559 z8799 unto x413 Jesse, 3448 Are here all 8552 z8804 [thy] children? 5288 And he said, 559 z8799 There remaineth 7604 z8804 yet x5750 the youngest, 6996 and, behold, x2009 he keepeth 7462 z8802 the sheep. 6629 And Samuel 8050 said 559 z8799 unto x413 Jesse, 3448 Send 7971 z8798 and fetch 3947 z8798 him: for x3588 we will not x3808 sit down 5437 z8799 till x5704 he come 935 z8800 hither. 6311

 16:12 And he sent, 7971 z8799 and brought x935 him in. y935 z8686 Now he x1931 [was] ruddy, 132 [and] withal 5973 of a beautiful 3303 countenance, 5869 and goodly 2896 to look to. 7210 And the LORD 3068 said, 559 z8799 Arise, 6965 z8798 anoint 4886 z8798 him: for x3588 this x2088 [is] he. x1931

 16:13 Then Samuel 8050 took 3947 z8799 x853 the horn 7161 of oil, 8081 and anointed 4886 z8799 him in the midst 7130 of his brethren: 251 and the Spirit 7307 of the LORD 3068 came 6743 z8799 upon x413 David 1732 from that day 3117 x4480 x1931 forward. 4605 So Samuel 8050 rose up, 6965 z8799 and went y3212 z8799 x1980 to Ramah. 7414

 16:14 ¶ But the Spirit 7307 of the LORD 3068 departed 5493 z8804 from x4480 x5973 Saul, 7586 and an evil 7451 spirit 7307 from x4480 x854 the LORD 3068 troubled 1204 z8765 him.

 16:15 And Saul's 7586 servants 5650 said 559 z8799 unto x413 him, Behold x2009 now, x4994 an evil 7451 spirit 7307 from God 430 troubleth 1204 z8764 thee.

 16:16 Let our lord 113 now x4994 command 559 z8799 thy servants, 5650 [which are] before 6440 thee, to seek out 1245 z8762 a man, 376 [who is] a cunning 3045 z8802 player 5059 z8764 on an harp: 3658 and it shall come to pass, x1961 when x1961 the evil 7451 spirit 7307 from God 430 is upon x5921 thee, that he shall play 5059 z8765 with his hand, 3027 and thou shalt be well. 2895 z8804

 16:17 And Saul 7586 said 559 z8799 unto x413 his servants, 5650 Provide 7200 z8798 me now x4994 a man 376 that can play 5059 z8763 well, 3190 z8688 and bring 935 z8689 [him] to x413 me.

 16:18 Then answered 6030 z8799 one 259 of the servants, 5288 and said, 559 z8799 Behold, x2009 I have seen 7200 z8804 a son 1121 of Jesse 3448 the Bethlehemite, 1022 [that is] cunning 3045 z8802 in playing, 5059 z8763 and a mighty 1368 valiant man, 2428 and a man 376 of war, 4421 and prudent 995 z8737 in matters, 1697 and a comely 8389 person, 376 and the LORD 3068 [is] with x5973 him.

 16:19 ¶ Wherefore Saul 7586 sent 7971 z8799 messengers 4397 unto x413 Jesse, 3448 and said, 559 z8799 Send 7971 z8798 me x853 David 1732 thy son, 1121 which x834 [is] with the sheep. 6629

 16:20 And Jesse 3448 took 3947 z8799 an ass 2543 [laden] with bread, 3899 and a bottle 4997 of wine, 3196 and a 259 kid, 1423 5795 and sent 7971 z8799 [them] by 3027 David 1732 his son 1121 unto x413 Saul. 7586

 16:21 And David 1732 came 935 z8799 to x413 Saul, 7586 and stood 5975 z8799 before 6440 him: and he loved 157 z8799 him greatly; 3966 and he became x1961 his armourbearer. 5375 3627 z8802

 16:22 And Saul 7586 sent 7971 z8799 to x413 Jesse, 3448 saying, 559 z8800 Let David, 1732 I pray thee, x4994 stand 5975 z8799 before 6440 me; for x3588 he hath found 4672 z8804 favour 2580 in my sight. 5869

 16:23 And it came to pass, x1961 when x1961 the [evil] spirit 7307 from God 430 was upon x413 Saul, 7586 that David 1732 took 3947 z8804 x853 an harp, 3658 and played 5059 z8765 with his hand: 3027 so Saul 7586 was refreshed, 7304 z8804 and was well, 2895 z8804 and the evil 7451 spirit 7307 departed 5493 z8804 from x4480 x5921 him.
