1 Jonathan, unwitting to his father, the priest, or the people, goeth and miraculously smiteth the Philistines' garrison. 15 A divine terror maketh them beat themselves. 17 Saul, not staying the priest's answer, setteth on them. 21 The captivated Hebrews, and the hidden Israelites, join against them. 24 Saul's unadvised adjuration hindreth the victory. 33 He restraineth the people from eating blood. 35 He buildeth an altar. 36 Jonathan, taken by lot, is saved by the people. 47 Saul's strength and family.

 14:1 ¶ Now it came to pass x1961 upon a day, 3117 that Jonathan y3129 x3083 the son 1121 of Saul 7586 said 559 z8799 unto x413 the young man 5288 that bare 5375 z8802 his armour, 3627 Come, y3212 z8798 x1980 and let us go over 5674 z8799 to x413 the Philistines' 6430 garrison, 4673 that x834 [is] on the other side. 5676 1975 x4480 But he told 5046 z8689 not x3808 his father. 1

 14:2 And Saul 7586 tarried 3427 z8802 in the uttermost y7097 part x7097 of Gibeah 1390 under x8478 a pomegranate tree 7416 which x834 [is] in Migron: 4051 and the people 5971 that x834 [were] with x5973 him [were] about six 8337 hundred 3967 men; 376

 14:3 And Ahiah, 281 the son 1121 of Ahitub, 285 Ichabod's 350 brother, 251 the son 1121 of Phinehas, 6372 the son 1121 of Eli, 5941 the LORD'S 3068 priest 3548 in Shiloh, 7887 wearing 5375 z8802 an ephod. 646 And the people 5971 knew 3045 z8804 not x3808 that x3588 Jonathan y3129 x3083 was gone. 1980 z8804

 14:4 ¶ And between x996 the passages, 4569 by which x834 Jonathan y3129 x3083 sought 1245 z8765 to go over 5674 z8800 unto x5921 the Philistines' 6430 garrison, 4673 [there was] a sharp 8127 rock 5553 on the one x4480 x2088 side, 5676 x4480 and a sharp 8127 rock 5553 on the other x4480 x2088 side: 5676 x4480 and the name 8034 of the one 259 [was] Bozez, 949 and the name 8034 of the other 259 Seneh. 5573

 14:5 The forefront 8127 of the one 259 [was] situate 4690 northward 6828 x4480 over against 4136 Michmash, 4363 and the other 259 southward 5045 x4480 over against 4136 Gibeah. 1387

 14:6 And Jonathan 3083 said 559 z8799 to x413 the young man 5288 that bare 5375 z8802 his armour, 3627 Come, y3212 z8798 x1980 and let us go over 5674 z8799 unto x413 the garrison 4673 of these x428 uncircumcised: 6189 it may be that x194 the LORD 3068 will work 6213 z8799 for us: for x3588 [there is] no x369 restraint 4622 to the LORD 3068 to save 3467 z8687 by many 7227 or x176 by few. 4592

 14:7 And his armourbearer 5375 3627 z8802 said 559 z8799 unto him, Do 6213 z8798 all x3605 that x834 [is] in thine heart: 3824 turn 5186 z8798 thee; behold, x2009 I [am] with x5973 thee according to thy heart. 3824

 14:8 Then said 559 z8799 Jonathan, 3083 Behold, x2009 we x587 will pass over 5674 z8802 unto x413 [these] men, y582 x376 and we will discover y1540 z8738 ourselves x1540 unto x413 them.

 14:9 If x518 they say 559 z8799 thus x3541 unto x413 us, Tarry 1826 z8798 until x5704 we come 5060 z8687 to x413 you; then we will stand still 5975 z8804 in our place, x8478 and will not x3808 go up 5927 z8799 unto x413 them.

 14:10 But if x518 they say 559 z8799 thus, x3541 Come up 5927 z8798 unto x5921 us; then we will go up: 5927 z8804 for x3588 the LORD 3068 hath delivered 5414 z8804 them into our hand: 3027 and this x2088 [shall be] a sign 226 unto us.

 14:11 And both 8147 of them discovered y1540 z8735 themselves x1540 unto x413 the garrison 4673 of the Philistines: 6430 and the Philistines 6430 said, 559 z8799 Behold, x2009 the Hebrews 5680 come forth 3318 z8802 out of x4480 the holes 2356 where x834 x8033 they had hid y2244 z8694 themselves. x2244

 14:12 And the men y582 x376 of the garrison 4675 answered 6030 z8799 x853 Jonathan y3129 x3083 and his armourbearer, 5375 3627 z8802 and said, 559 z8799 Come up 5927 z8798 to x413 us, and we will shew 3045 z8686 you a thing. 1697 And Jonathan y3129 x3083 said 559 z8799 unto x413 his armourbearer, 5375 3627 z8802 Come up 5927 z8798 after 310 me: for x3588 the LORD 3068 hath delivered 5414 z8804 them into the hand 3027 of Israel. 3478

 14:13 And Jonathan y3129 x3083 climbed up 5927 z8799 upon x5921 his hands 3027 and upon x5921 his feet, 7272 and his armourbearer 5375 3627 z8802 after 310 him: and they fell 5307 z8799 before 6440 Jonathan; y3129 x3083 and his armourbearer 5375 3627 z8802 slew 4191 z8789 after 310 him.

 14:14 And that first 7223 slaughter, 4347 which x834 Jonathan y3129 x3083 and his armourbearer 5375 3627 z8802 made, 5221 z8689 was x1961 about twenty 6242 men, 376 within as it were an half 2677 acre 4618 of land, 7704 [which] a yoke 6776 [of oxen might plow].

 14:15 And there was x1961 trembling 2731 in the host, 4264 in the field, 7704 and among all x3605 the people: 5971 the garrison, 4673 and the spoilers, 7843 z8688 they x1992 also x1571 trembled, 2729 z8804 and the earth 776 quaked: 7264 z8799 so it was x1961 a very great 430 trembling. 2731

 14:16 And the watchmen 6822 z8802 of Saul 7586 in Gibeah 1390 of Benjamin 1144 looked; 7200 z8799 and, behold, x2009 the multitude 1995 melted away, 4127 z8738 and they went y3212 z8799 x1980 on beating down 1986 z8800 [one another].

 14:17 Then said 559 z8799 Saul 7586 unto the people 5971 that x834 [were] with x854 him, Number 6485 z8798 now, x4994 and see 7200 z8798 who x4310 is gone 1980 z8804 from x4480 x5973 us. And when they had numbered, 6485 z8799 behold, x2009 Jonathan y3129 x3083 and his armourbearer 5375 3627 z8802 [were] not x369 [there].

 14:18 And Saul 7586 said 559 z8799 unto Ahiah, 281 Bring hither 5066 z8685 the ark 727 of God. 430 For x3588 the ark 727 of God 430 was x1961 at that x1931 time 3117 with the children 1121 of Israel. 3478

 14:19 ¶ And it came to pass, x1961 while x5704 Saul 7586 talked 1696 z8765 unto x413 the priest, 3548 that the noise 1995 that x834 [was] in the host 4264 of the Philistines 6430 went y3212 z8799 on 1980 z8800 and increased: 7227 x1980 and Saul 7586 said 559 z8799 unto x413 the priest, 3548 Withdraw 622 z8798 thine hand. 3027

 14:20 And Saul 7586 and all x3605 the people 5971 that x834 [were] with x854 him assembled y2199 z8735 themselves, x2199 and they came 935 z8799 to x5704 the battle: 4421 and, behold, x2009 every man's 376 sword 2719 was x1961 against his fellow, 7453 [and there was] a very 3966 great 1419 discomfiture. 4103

 14:21 Moreover the Hebrews 5680 [that] were x1961 with the Philistines 6430 before 865 that time, 8032 which x834 went up 5927 z8804 with x5973 them into the camp 4264 [from the country] round about, 5439 even they x1992 also x1571 [turned] to be x1961 with x5973 the Israelites 3478 that x834 [were] with x5973 Saul 7586 and Jonathan. y3129 x3083

 14:22 Likewise all x3605 the men 376 of Israel 3478 which had hid y2244 z8693 themselves x2244 in mount 2022 Ephraim, 669 [when] they heard 8085 z8804 that x3588 the Philistines 6430 fled, 5127 z8804 even they x1992 also x1571 followed hard 1692 z8686 after 310 them in the battle. 4421

 14:23 So the LORD 3068 saved 3467 z8686 x853 Israel 3478 that x1931 day: 3117 and the battle 4421 passed over 5674 z8804 unto x853 Bethaven. 1007

 14:24 ¶ And the men 376 of Israel 3478 were distressed 5065 z8738 that x1931 day: 3117 for Saul 7586 had adjured 422 z8686 x853 the people, 5971 saying, 559 z8800 Cursed 779 z8803 [be] the man 376 that x834 eateth 398 z8799 [any] food 3899 until x5704 evening, 6153 that I may be avenged 5358 z8738 on mine enemies. 341 z8802 x4480 So none x3808 x3605 of the people 5971 tasted 2938 z8804 [any] food. 3899

 14:25 And all x3605 [they of] the land 776 came 935 z8804 to a wood; 3293 and there was x1961 honey 1706 upon 6440 x5921 the ground. 7704

 14:26 And when the people 5971 were come 935 z8799 into x413 the wood, 3293 behold, x2009 the honey 1706 dropped; 1982 but no x369 man put 5381 z8688 his hand 3027 to x413 his mouth: 6310 for x3588 the people 5971 feared 3372 z8804 x853 the oath. 7621

 14:27 But Jonathan y3129 x3083 heard 8085 z8804 not x3808 when his father 1 charged y7650 z0 the people y5971 with the oath: 7650 z8687 x853 x5971 wherefore he put forth 7971 z8799 x853 the end 7097 of the rod 4294 that x834 [was] in his hand, 3027 and dipped 2881 z8799 it x853 in an honeycomb, 3295 1706 and put 7725 z8686 his hand 3027 to x413 his mouth; 6310 and his eyes 5869 were enlightened. 215 z8799

 14:28 Then answered 6030 z8799 one 376 of the people, 5971 x4480 and said, 559 z8799 Thy father 1 straitly y7650 z8687 charged y7650 z0 the people y5971 with an oath, 7650 z8689 x853 x5971 saying, 559 z8800 Cursed 779 z8803 [be] the man 376 that x834 eateth 398 z8799 [any] food 3899 this day. 3117 And the people 5971 were faint. y5774 z8799 x5888

 14:29 Then said 559 z8799 Jonathan, y3129 x3083 My father 1 hath troubled 5916 z8804 x853 the land: 776 see, 7200 z8798 I pray you, x4994 how x3588 mine eyes 5869 have been enlightened, 215 z8804 because x3588 I tasted 2938 z8804 a little 4592 of this x2088 honey. 1706

 14:30 How much more, 637 x3588 if haply 3863 x3588 the people 5971 had eaten y398 z8804 freely 398 z8800 to day 3117 of the spoil 7998 x4480 of their enemies 341 z8802 which x834 they found? 4672 z8804 for x3588 had there not x3808 been now x6258 a much greater 7235 z8804 slaughter 4347 among the Philistines? 6430

 14:31 And they smote 5221 z8686 the Philistines 6430 that x1931 day 3117 from Michmash 4363 x4480 to Aijalon: 357 and the people 5971 were very 3966 faint. y5774 z8799 x5888

 14:32 And the people 5971 flew 6213 z8799 y5860 upon x413 the spoil, 7998 and took 3947 z8799 sheep, 6629 and oxen, 1241 and calves, 1121 x1241 and slew 7819 z8799 [them] on the ground: 776 and the people 5971 did eat 398 z8799 [them] with x5921 the blood. 1818

 14:33 ¶ Then they told 5046 z8686 Saul, 7586 saying, 559 z8800 Behold, x2009 the people 5971 sin 2398 z8802 against the LORD, 3068 in that they eat 398 z8800 with x5921 the blood. 1818 And he said, 559 z8799 Ye have transgressed: 898 z8804 roll 1556 z8798 a great 1419 stone 68 unto x413 me this day. 3117

 14:34 And Saul 7586 said, 559 z8799 Disperse y6327 z8798 yourselves x6327 among the people, 5971 and say 559 z8804 unto them, Bring me hither 5066 z8685 x413 every man 376 his ox, 7794 and every man 376 his sheep, 7716 and slay 7819 z8804 [them] here, x2088 and eat; 398 z8804 and sin 2398 z8799 not x3808 against the LORD 3068 in eating 398 z8800 with x413 the blood. 1818 And all x3605 the people 5971 brought 5066 z8686 every man 376 his ox 7794 with x3027 him y3027 that night, 3915 and slew 7819 z8799 [them] there. x8033

 14:35 And Saul 7586 built 1129 z8799 an altar 4196 unto the LORD: 3068 the same was the first 2490 z8689 altar 4196 that he built 1129 z8800 unto the LORD. 3068

 14:36 ¶ And Saul 7586 said, 559 z8799 Let us go down 3381 z8799 after 310 the Philistines 6430 by night, 3915 and spoil 962 z8799 them until x5704 the morning 1242 light, 216 and let us not x3808 leave 7604 z8686 a man 376 of them. And they said, 559 z8799 Do 6213 z8798 whatsoever x3605 seemeth 5869 good 2896 unto thee. Then said 559 z8799 the priest, 3548 Let us draw near 7126 z8799 hither 1988 unto x413 God. 430

 14:37 And Saul 7586 asked y7592 z8799 counsel x7592 of God, 430 Shall I go down 3381 z8799 after 310 the Philistines? 6430 wilt thou deliver 5414 z8799 them into the hand 3027 of Israel? 3478 But he answered 6030 z8804 him not x3808 that x1931 day. 3117

 14:38 And Saul 7586 said, 559 z8799 Draw ye near 5066 z8798 hither, 1988 all x3605 the chief 6438 of the people: 5971 and know 3045 z8798 and see 7200 z8798 wherein 4100 this sin 2403 hath been x1961 this x2063 day. 3117

 14:39 For, x3588 [as] the LORD 3068 liveth, 2416 which saveth 3467 z8688 x853 Israel, 3478 though x3588 x518 it be 3426 in Jonathan y3129 x3083 my son, 1121 he shall surely y4191 z8800 die. 4191 z8799 But [there was] not a man x369 among all x4480 x3605 the people 5971 [that] answered 6030 z8802 him.

 14:40 Then said 559 z8799 he unto x413 all x3605 Israel, 3478 Be x1961 ye x859 on one 259 side, 5676 and I x589 and Jonathan y3129 x3083 my son 1121 will be x1961 on the other 259 side. 5676 And the people 5971 said 559 z8799 unto x413 Saul, 7586 Do 6213 z8798 what seemeth 5869 good 2896 unto thee.

 14:41 Therefore Saul 7586 said 559 z8799 unto x413 the LORD 3068 God 430 of Israel, 3478 Give 3051 z8798 a perfect 8549 [lot]. And Saul 7586 and Jonathan y3129 x3083 were taken: 3920 z8735 but the people 5971 escaped. 3318 z8804

 14:42 And Saul 7586 said, 559 z8799 Cast 5307 z8685 [lots] between x996 me and Jonathan y3129 x3083 my son. 1121 And Jonathan y3129 x3083 was taken. 3920 z8735

 14:43 Then Saul 7586 said 559 z8799 to x413 Jonathan, y3129 x3083 Tell 5046 z8685 me what x4100 thou hast done. 6213 z8804 And Jonathan y3129 x3083 told 5046 z8686 him, and said, 559 z8799 I did but y2938 z8800 taste 2938 z8804 a little 4592 honey 1706 with the end 7097 of the rod 4294 that x834 [was] in mine hand, 3027 [and], lo, 2009 I must die. 4191 z8799

 14:44 And Saul 7586 answered, 559 z8799 God 430 do x6213 so y6213 z8799 x3541 and more x3254 also: y3254 z8686 x3541 for x3588 thou shalt surely y4191 z8800 die, 4191 z8799 Jonathan. y3129 x3083

 14:45 And the people 5971 said 559 z8799 unto x413 Saul, 7586 Shall Jonathan y3129 x3083 die, 4191 z8799 who x834 hath wrought 6213 z8804 this x2063 great 1419 salvation 3444 in Israel? 3478 God forbid: 2486 [as] the LORD 3068 liveth, 2416 there shall not x518 one hair 8185 x4480 of his head 7218 fall 5307 z8799 to the ground; 776 for x3588 he hath wrought 6213 z8804 with x5973 God 430 this x2088 day. 3117 So the people 5971 rescued 6299 z8799 x853 Jonathan, y3129 x3083 that he died 4191 z8804 not. x3808

 14:46 Then Saul 7586 went up 5927 z8799 from following 310 x4480 the Philistines: 6430 and the Philistines 6430 went 1980 z8804 to their own place. 4725

 14:47 ¶ So Saul 7586 took 3920 z8804 the kingdom 4410 over x5921 Israel, 3478 and fought 3898 z8735 against all x3605 his enemies 341 z8802 on every side, 5439 against Moab, 4124 and against the children 1121 of Ammon, 5983 and against Edom, 123 and against the kings 4428 of Zobah, 6678 and against the Philistines: 6430 and whithersoever x3605 x834 he turned 6437 z8799 himself, he vexed 7561 z8686 [them].

 14:48 And he gathered 6213 z8799 an host, 2428 and smote 5221 z8686 x853 the Amalekites, 6002 and delivered 5337 z8686 x853 Israel 3478 out of the hands 3027 x4480 of them that spoiled 8154 z8802 them.

 14:49 Now the sons 1121 of Saul 7586 were x1961 Jonathan, y3129 x3083 and Ishui, 3440 and Melchishua: 4444 and the names 8034 of his two 8147 daughters 1323 [were these]; the name 8034 of the firstborn 1067 Merab, 4764 and the name 8034 of the younger 6996 Michal: 4324

 14:50 And the name 8034 of Saul's 7586 wife 802 [was] Ahinoam, 293 the daughter 1323 of Ahimaaz: 290 and the name 8034 of the captain 8269 of his host 6635 [was] Abner, 74 the son 1121 of Ner, 5369 Saul's 7586 uncle. 1730

 14:51 And Kish 7027 [was] the father 1 of Saul; 7586 and Ner 5369 the father 1 of Abner 74 [was] the son 1121 of Abiel. 22

 14:52 And there was x1961 sore 2389 war 4421 against x5921 the Philistines 6430 all x3605 the days 3117 of Saul: 7586 and when Saul 7586 saw 7200 z8804 any x3605 strong 1368 man, 376 or any x3605 valiant 2428 man, 1121 he took 622 z8799 him unto x413 him.
