Judges 8

1 Gideon pacifieth the Ephraimites. 4 Succoth and Penuel refuse to relieve Gideon's army. 10 Zebah and Zalmunna are taken. 13 Succoth and Penuel are destroyed. 18 Gideon revengeth his brethren's death on Zebah and Zalmunna. 22 He refuseth government. 24 His ephod cause of idolatry. 28 Midian subdued. 33 The Israelites' idolatry and ingratitude.

 8:1 ¶ And the men 376 of Ephraim 669 said 559 z8799 unto x413 him, Why x4100 hast thou y4100 served 6213 z8804 us thus, y1697 x2088 that thou calledst 7121 z8800 us not, x1115 when x3588 thou wentest 1980 z8804 to fight 3898 z8736 with the Midianites? 4080 And they did chide 7378 z8799 with x854 him sharply. 2394

 8:2 And he said 559 z8799 unto x413 them, What x4100 have I done 6213 z8804 now x6258 in comparison of you? [Is] not x3808 the gleaning y5955 of the grapes x5955 of Ephraim 669 better 2896 than the vintage 1210 x4480 of Abi-ezer? 44

 8:3 God 430 hath delivered 5414 z8804 into your hands 3027 x853 the princes 8269 of Midian, 4080 x853 Oreb 6159 and Zeeb: 2062 and what x4100 was I able 3201 z8804 to do 6213 z8800 in comparison of you? Then x227 their anger 7307 was abated 7503 z8804 toward x4480 x5921 him, when he had said y1697 x1696 that. y1696 z8763 x2088

 8:4 ¶ And Gideon 1439 came 935 z8799 to Jordan, 3383 [and] passed over, 5674 z8802 he, x1931 and the three 7969 hundred 3967 men 376 that x834 [were] with x854 him, faint, 5889 yet pursuing 7291 z8802 [them].

 8:5 And he said 559 z8799 unto the men y582 x376 of Succoth, 5523 Give, 5414 z8798 I pray you, x4994 loaves 3603 of bread 3899 unto the people 5971 that x834 follow 7272 me; for x3588 they x1992 [be] faint, 5889 and I x595 am pursuing 7291 z8802 after 310 Zebah 2078 and Zalmunna, 6759 kings 4428 of Midian. 4080

 8:6 ¶ And the princes 8269 of Succoth 5523 said, 559 z8799 [Are] the hands 3709 of Zebah 2078 and Zalmunna 6759 now x6258 in thine hand, 3027 that x3588 we should give 5414 z8799 bread 3899 unto thine army? 6635

 8:7 And Gideon 1439 said, 559 z8799 Therefore x3651 when the LORD 3068 hath delivered 5414 z8800 x853 Zebah 2078 and Zalmunna 6759 into mine hand, 3027 then I will tear 1758 z8804 x853 your flesh 1320 with x854 the thorns 6975 of the wilderness 4057 and with x854 briers. 1303

 8:8 ¶ And he went up 5927 z8799 thence x4480 x8033 to Penuel, 6439 and spoke 1696 z8762 unto x413 them likewise: 2063 and the men y582 x376 of Penuel 6439 answered 6030 z8799 him as x834 the men y582 x376 of Succoth 5523 had answered 6030 z8804 [him].

 8:9 And he spoke 559 z8799 also x1571 unto the men y582 x376 of Penuel, 6439 saying, 559 z8800 When I come again 7725 z8800 in peace, 7965 I will break down 5422 z8799 x853 this x2088 tower. 4026

 8:10 ¶ Now Zebah 2078 and Zalmunna 6759 [were] in Karkor, 7174 and their hosts 4264 with x5973 them, about fifteen 2568 6240 thousand 505 [men], all x3605 that were left 3498 z8737 of all x4480 x3605 the hosts 4264 of the children 1121 of the east: 6924 for there fell 5307 z8802 a hundred 3967 and twenty 6242 thousand 505 men 376 that drew 8025 z8802 sword. 2719

 8:11 ¶ And Gideon 1439 went up 5927 z8799 by the way 1870 of them that dwelt 7931 z8803 in tents 168 on the east 6924 x4480 of Nobah 5025 and Jogbehah, 3011 and smote 5221 z8686 x853 the host: 4264 for the host 4264 was x1961 secure. 983

 8:12 And when Zebah 2078 and Zalmunna 6759 fled, 5127 z8799 he pursued 7291 z8799 after 310 them, and took 3920 z8799 x853 the two 8147 kings 4428 of Midian, 4080 x853 Zebah 2078 and Zalmunna, 6759 and discomfited 2729 z8689 all x3605 the host. 4264

 8:13 ¶ And Gideon 1439 the son 1121 of Joash 3101 returned 7725 z8799 from x4480 battle 4421 before 4608 x4480 the sun 2775 [was up],

 8:14 And caught 3920 z8799 a young man 5288 of the men y582 x4480 x376 of Succoth, 5523 and inquired 7592 z8799 of him: and he described 3789 z8799 unto x413 him x853 the princes 8269 of Succoth, 5523 and the elders 2205 thereof, [even] threescore and seventeen 7657 7651 men. 376

 8:15 And he came 935 z8799 unto x413 the men y582 x376 of Succoth, 5523 and said, 559 z8799 Behold x2009 Zebah 2078 and Zalmunna, 6759 with whom x834 ye did upbraid 2778 z8765 me, saying, 559 z8800 [Are] the hands 3709 of Zebah 2078 and Zalmunna 6759 now x6258 in thine hand, 3027 that x3588 we should give 5414 z8799 bread 3899 unto thy men y582 x376 [that are] weary? 3287

 8:16 And he took 3947 z8799 x853 the elders 2205 of the city, 5892 and thorns 6975 of the wilderness 4057 and briers, 1303 and with them he taught 3045 z8686 x853 the men y582 x376 of Succoth. 5523

 8:17 And he beat down 5422 z8804 the tower 4026 of Penuel, 6439 and slew 2026 z8799 x853 the men y582 x376 of the city. 5892

 8:18 ¶ Then said 559 z8799 he unto x413 Zebah 2078 and Zalmunna, 6759 What y375 manner x375 of men y582 x376 [were they] whom x834 ye slew 2026 z8804 at Tabor? 8396 And they answered, 559 z8799 As thou 3644 [art], so [were] they; each one 259 resembled 8389 the children 1121 of a king. 4428

 8:19 And he said, 559 z8799 They x1992 [were] my brethren, 251 [even] the sons 1121 of my mother: 517 [as] the LORD 3068 liveth, 2416 if 3863 ye had saved them alive, 2421 z8689 x853 I would not x3808 slay 2026 z8804 you.

 8:20 And he said 559 z8799 unto Jether 3500 his firstborn, 1060 Up, 6965 z8798 [and] slay 2026 z8798 them. But the youth 5288 drew 8025 z8804 not x3808 his sword: 2719 for x3588 he feared, 3372 z8804 because x3588 he [was] yet x5750 a youth. 5288

 8:21 Then Zebah 2078 and Zalmunna 6759 said, 559 z8799 Rise 6965 z8798 thou, x859 and fall 6293 z8798 upon us: for x3588 as the man 376 [is], [so is] his strength. 1369 And Gideon 1439 arose, 6965 z8799 and slew 2026 z8799 x853 Zebah 2078 and Zalmunna, 6759 and took away 3947 z8799 x853 the ornaments 7720 that x834 [were] on their camels' 1581 necks. 6677

 8:22 ¶ Then the men 376 of Israel 3478 said 559 z8799 unto x413 Gideon, 1439 Rule 4910 z8798 thou over us, both x1571 thou, x859 and x1571 thy son, 1121 and thy son's 1121 son 1121 also: x1571 for x3588 thou hast delivered 3467 z8689 us from the hand 3027 x4480 of Midian. 4080

 8:23 And Gideon 1439 said 559 z8799 unto x413 them, I x589 will not x3808 rule 4910 z8799 over you, neither x3808 shall my son 1121 rule 4910 z8799 over you: the LORD 3068 shall rule 4910 z8799 over you.

 8:24 ¶ And Gideon 1439 said 559 z8799 unto x413 them, I would desire 7592 z8799 a request 7596 of x4480 you, that ye would give 5414 z8798 me every man 376 the earrings 5141 of his prey. 7998 (For x3588 they had golden 2091 earrings, 5141 because x3588 they x1992 [were] Ishmaelites.) 3459

 8:25 And they answered, 559 z8799 We will willingly y5414 z8800 give 5414 z8799 [them]. And they spread 6566 z8799 x853 a garment, 8071 and did cast 7993 z8686 therein x8033 every man 376 the earrings 5141 of his prey. 7998

 8:26 And the weight 4948 of the golden 2091 earrings 5141 that x834 he requested 7592 z8804 was x1961 a thousand 505 and seven 7651 hundred 3967 [shekels] of gold; 2091 beside x905 x4480 ornaments, 7720 and collars, 5188 and purple 713 raiment 899 that [was] on x7945 x5921 the kings 4428 of Midian, 4080 and beside x905 x4480 the chains 6060 that x834 [were] about their camels' 1581 necks. 6677

 8:27 And Gideon 1439 made 6213 z8799 an ephod 646 thereof, and put 3322 z8686 it in his city, 5892 [even] in Ophrah: 6084 and all x3605 Israel 3478 went thither a whoring 2181 z8799 x8033 after 310 it: which thing became x1961 a snare 4170 unto Gideon, 1439 and to his house. 1004

 8:28 ¶ Thus was Midian 4080 subdued 3665 z8735 before 6440 the children 1121 of Israel, 3478 so that they lifted up 5375 z8800 their heads 7218 no x3808 more. 3254 z8804 And the country 776 was in quietness 8252 z8799 forty 705 years 8141 in the days 3117 of Gideon. 1439

 8:29 ¶ And Jerubbaal 3378 the son 1121 of Joash 3101 went y3212 z8799 x1980 and dwelt 3427 z8799 in his own house. 1004

 8:30 And Gideon 1439 had x1961 threescore and ten 7657 sons 1121 of his body 3409 begotten: 3318 z8802 for x3588 he had x1961 many 7227 wives. 802

 8:31 And his concubine 6370 that x834 [was] in Shechem, 7927 she x1931 also x1571 bore 3205 z8804 him a son, 1121 x853 whose name 8034 he called 7760 z8799 Abimelech. 40

 8:32 ¶ And Gideon 1439 the son 1121 of Joash 3101 died 4191 z8799 in a good 2896 old age, 7872 and was buried 6912 z8735 in the sepulcher 6913 of Joash 3101 his father, 1 in Ophrah 6084 of the Abi-ezrites. 33

 8:33 And it came to pass, x1961 as soon as x834 Gideon 1439 was dead, 4191 z8804 that the children 1121 of Israel 3478 turned again, 7725 z8799 and went a whoring 2181 z8799 after 310 Baalim, 1168 and made 7760 z8799 Baal-berith 1170 their god. 430

 8:34 And the children 1121 of Israel 3478 remembered 2142 z8804 not x3808 x853 the LORD 3068 their God, 430 who had delivered 5337 z8688 x853 them out of the hands 3027 x4480 of all x3605 their enemies 341 z8802 on every side: 5439 x4480

 8:35 Neither x3808 showed 6213 z8804 they kindness 2617 to x5973 the house 1004 of Jerubbaal, 3378 [namely], Gideon, 1439 according to all x3605 the goodness 2896 which x834 he had showed 6213 z8804 unto x5973 Israel. 3478
