Judges 11

1 The covenant between Jephthah and the Gileadites, that he should be their head. 12 The treaty of peace between him and the Ammonites is in vain. 29 Jephthah's vow. 32 His conquest of the Ammonites. 34 He performeth his vow on his daughter.

 11:1 ¶ Now Jephthah 3316 the Gileadite 1569 was x1961 a mighty man 1368 of valour, 2428 and he x1931 [was] the son 1121 of an harlot: 802 2181 z8802 and Gilead 1568 begat 3205 z8686 x853 Jephthah. 3316

 11:2 And Gilead's 1568 wife 802 bare 3205 z8799 him sons; 1121 and his wife's 802 sons 1121 grew up, 1431 z8799 and they thrust out 1644 z8762 x853 Jephthah, 3316 and said 559 z8799 unto him, Thou shalt not x3808 inherit 5157 z8799 in our father's 1 house; 1004 for x3588 thou x859 [art] the son 1121 of a strange 312 woman. 802

 11:3 Then Jephthah 3316 fled 1272 z8799 from 6440 x4480 his brethren, 251 and dwelt 3427 z8799 in the land 776 of Tob: 2897 and there were gathered 3950 z8691 vain 7386 men y582 x376 to x413 Jephthah, 3316 and went out 3318 z8799 with x5973 him.

 11:4 ¶ And it came to pass x1961 in process of time, 3117 x4480 that the children 1121 of Ammon 5983 made war 3898 z8735 against x5973 Israel. 3478

 11:5 And it was x1961 so, that when x834 the children 1121 of Ammon 5983 made war 3898 z8738 against x5973 Israel, 3478 the elders 2205 of Gilead 1568 went y3212 z8799 x1980 to fetch 3947 z8800 x853 Jephthah 3316 out of the land 776 x4480 of Tob: 2897

 11:6 And they said 559 z8799 unto Jephthah, 3316 Come, y3212 z8798 x1980 and be x1961 our captain, 7101 that we may fight 3898 z8735 with the children 1121 of Ammon. 5983

 11:7 And Jephthah 3316 said 559 z8799 unto the elders 2205 of Gilead, 1568 Did not x3808 ye x859 hate 8130 z8804 me, and expel 1644 z8762 me out of my father's 1 house? 1004 x4480 and why x4069 are ye come 935 z8804 unto x413 me now x6258 when x834 ye are in distress? y6887 z8804 x6862

 11:8 And the elders 2205 of Gilead 1568 said 559 z8799 unto x413 Jephthah, 3316 Therefore x3651 we turn again 7725 z8804 to x413 thee now, x6258 that thou mayest go 1980 z8804 with x5973 us, and fight 3898 z8738 against the children 1121 of Ammon, 5983 and be x1961 our head 7218 over all x3605 the inhabitants 3427 z8802 of Gilead. 1568

 11:9 And Jephthah 3316 said 559 z8799 unto x413 the elders 2205 of Gilead, 1568 If x518 ye x859 bring me home again 7725 z8688 x853 to fight 3898 z8736 against the children 1121 of Ammon, 5983 and the LORD 3068 deliver 5414 z8804 them before 6440 me, shall I x595 be x1961 your head? 7218

 11:10 And the elders 2205 of Gilead 1568 said 559 z8799 unto x413 Jephthah, 3316 The LORD 3068 be x1961 witness 8085 z8802 between x996 us, if x518 we do 6213 z8799 not x3808 so x3651 according to thy words. 1697

 11:11 Then Jephthah 3316 went y3212 z8799 x1980 with x5973 the elders 2205 of Gilead, 1568 and the people 5971 made 7760 z8799 him head 7218 and captain 7101 over x5921 them: and Jephthah 3316 uttered 1696 z8762 x853 all x3605 his words 1697 before 6440 the LORD 3068 in Mizpeh. 4709

 11:12 ¶ And Jephthah 3316 sent 7971 z8799 messengers 4397 unto x413 the king 4428 of the children 1121 of Ammon, 5983 saying, 559 z8800 What x4100 hast thou to do with me, that x3588 thou art come 935 z8804 against x413 me to fight 3898 z8736 in my land? 776

 11:13 And the king 4428 of the children 1121 of Ammon 5983 answered 559 z8799 unto x413 the messengers 4397 of Jephthah, 3316 Because x3588 Israel 3478 took away 3947 z8804 x853 my land, 776 when they came up 5927 z8800 out of Egypt, 4714 x4480 from Arnon 769 x4480 even unto x5704 Jabbok, 2999 and unto x5704 Jordan: 3383 now x6258 therefore restore those [lands] again 7725 z8685 x853 peaceably. 7965

 11:14 And Jephthah 3316 sent 7971 z8799 messengers 4397 again 3254 z8686 x5750 unto x413 the king 4428 of the children 1121 of Ammon: 5983

 11:15 And said 559 z8799 unto him, Thus x3541 saith 559 z8804 Jephthah, 3316 Israel 3478 took not away 3947 z8804 x3808 x853 the land 776 of Moab, 4124 nor the land 776 of the children 1121 of Ammon: 5983

 11:16 But x3588 when Israel 3478 came up 5927 z8800 from Egypt, 4714 x4480 and walked y3212 z8799 x1980 through the wilderness 4057 unto x5704 the Red 5488 sea, 3220 and came 935 z8799 to Kadesh; 6946

 11:17 Then Israel 3478 sent 7971 z8799 messengers 4397 unto x413 the king 4428 of Edom, 123 saying, 559 z8800 Let me, I pray thee, x4994 pass x5674 through y5674 z8799 thy land: 776 but the king 4428 of Edom 123 would not x3808 hearken 8085 z8804 [thereto]. And in like manner x1571 they sent 7971 z8804 unto x413 the king 4428 of Moab: 4124 but he would 14 z8804 not x3808 [consent]: and Israel 3478 abode 3427 z8799 in Kadesh. 6946

 11:18 Then they went along y3212 z8799 x1980 through the wilderness, 4057 and compassed 5437 z8799 x853 the land 776 of Edom, 123 and the land 776 of Moab, 4124 and came 935 z8799 by the east side 4217 8121 x4480 of the land 776 of Moab, 4124 and pitched 2583 z8799 on the other side 5676 of Arnon, 769 but came 935 z8804 not x3808 within the border 1366 of Moab: 4124 for x3588 Arnon 769 [was] the border 1366 of Moab. 4124

 11:19 And Israel 3478 sent 7971 z8799 messengers 4397 unto x413 Sihon 5511 king 4428 of the Amorites, 567 the king 4428 of Heshbon; 2809 and Israel 3478 said 559 z8799 unto him, Let us pass, 5674 z8799 we pray thee, x4994 through thy land 776 into 5704 my place. 4725

 11:20 But Sihon 5511 trusted 539 z8689 not x3808 x853 Israel 3478 to pass 5674 z8800 through his coast: 1366 but Sihon 5511 gathered y622 z0 all his people y5971 together, 622 z8799 x853 x3605 x5971 and pitched 2583 z8799 in Jahaz, 3096 and fought 3898 z8735 against x5973 Israel. 3478

 11:21 And the LORD 3068 God 430 of Israel 3478 delivered 5414 z8799 x853 Sihon 5511 and all x3605 his people 5971 into the hand 3027 of Israel, 3478 and they smote 5221 z8686 them: so Israel 3478 possessed 3423 z8799 x853 all x3605 the land 776 of the Amorites, 567 the inhabitants 3427 z8802 of that x1931 country. 776

 11:22 And they possessed 3423 z8799 x853 all x3605 the coasts 1366 of the Amorites, 567 from Arnon 769 x4480 even unto x5704 Jabbok, 2999 and from x4480 the wilderness 4057 even unto x5704 Jordan. 3383

 11:23 So now x6258 the LORD 3068 God 430 of Israel 3478 hath dispossessed 3423 z8689 x853 the Amorites 567 from before 6440 x4480 his people 5971 Israel, 3478 and shouldest thou x859 possess 3423 z8799 it?

 11:24 Wilt not x3808 thou possess 3423 z8799 x853 that which x834 Chemosh 3645 thy god 430 giveth thee to possess? 3423 z8686 So whomsoever x3605 x834 the LORD 3068 our God 430 shall drive out 3423 z8689 from before 6440 x4480 us, them will we possess. 3423 z8799

 11:25 And now x6258 [art] thou x859 any thing better 2896 than Balak 1111 x4480 the son 1121 of Zippor, 6834 king 4428 of Moab? 4124 did he ever y7378 z8800 strive 7378 z8804 against x5973 Israel, 3478 or x518 did he ever y3898 z8736 fight 3898 z8738 against them,

 11:26 While Israel 3478 dwelt 3427 z8800 in Heshbon 2809 and her towns, 1323 and in Aroer 6177 and her towns, 1323 and in all x3605 the cities 5892 that x834 [be] along by x5921 the coasts 3027 of Arnon, 769 three 7969 hundred 3967 years? 8141 why x4069 therefore did ye not x3808 recover 5337 z8689 [them] within that x1931 time? 6256

 11:27 Wherefore I x595 have not x3808 sinned 2398 z8804 against thee, but thou x859 doest 6213 z8802 y853 me wrong 7451 to war 3898 z8736 against me: the LORD 3068 the Judge 8199 z8802 be judge 8199 z8799 this day 3117 between x996 the children 1121 of Israel 3478 and the children 1121 of Ammon. 5983

 11:28 Howbeit the king 4428 of the children 1121 of Ammon 5983 hearkened 8085 z8804 not x3808 unto x413 the words 1697 of Jephthah 3316 which x834 he sent 7971 z8804 x413 him.

 11:29 ¶ Then the Spirit 7307 of the LORD 3068 came x1961 upon x5921 Jephthah, 3316 and he passed over 5674 z8799 x853 Gilead, 1568 and Manasseh, 4519 and passed over 5674 z8799 x853 Mizpeh 4708 of Gilead, 1568 and from Mizpeh 4708 x4480 of Gilead 1568 he passed over 5674 z8804 [unto] the children 1121 of Ammon. 5983

 11:30 And Jephthah 3316 vowed 5087 z8799 a vow 5088 unto the LORD, 3068 and said, 559 z8799 If x518 thou shalt without fail y5414 z8800 deliver 5414 z8799 x853 the children 1121 of Ammon 5983 into mine hands, 3027

 11:31 Then it shall be, x1961 that whatsoever y3318 z8802 x834 cometh forth 3318 z8799 of the doors 1817 x4480 of my house 1004 to meet 7125 z8800 me, when I return 7725 z8800 in peace 7965 from the children 1121 x4480 of Ammon, 5983 shall surely be x1961 the LORD'S, 3068 and I will offer it up 5927 z8689 for a burnt offering. 5930

 11:32 ¶ So Jephthah 3316 passed over 5674 z8799 unto x413 the children 1121 of Ammon 5983 to fight 3898 z8736 against them; and the LORD 3068 delivered 5414 z8799 them into his hands. 3027

 11:33 And he smote 5221 z8686 them from Aroer, 6177 x4480 even till x5704 thou come 935 z8800 to Minnith, 4511 [even] twenty 6242 cities, 5892 and unto x5704 the plain 58 of the vineyards, 3754 z8677 y64 with a very 3966 great 1419 slaughter. 4347 Thus the children 1121 of Ammon 5983 were subdued 3665 z8735 before 6440 x4480 the children 1121 of Israel. 3478

 11:34 ¶ And Jephthah 3316 came 935 z8799 to Mizpeh 4709 unto x413 his house, 1004 and, behold, x2009 his daughter 1323 came out 3318 z8802 to meet 7125 z8800 him with timbrels 8596 and with dances: 4246 and she x1931 [was his] only child; 3173 beside x4480 her he had neither x369 son 1121 nor 176 daughter. 1323

 11:35 And it came to pass, x1961 when he saw 7200 z8800 her, that he rent 7167 z8799 x853 his clothes, 899 and said, 559 z8799 Alas, 162 my daughter! 1323 thou hast brought y3766 z0 me very y3766 z8689 low, 3766 z8687 and thou x859 art x1961 one of them that trouble 5916 z8802 me: for I x595 have opened 6475 z8804 my mouth 6310 unto x413 the LORD, 3068 and I cannot 3201 z8799 x3808 go back. 7725 z8800

 11:36 And she said 559 z8799 unto x413 him, My father, 1 [if] thou hast opened 6475 z8804 x853 thy mouth 6310 unto x413 the LORD, 3068 do 6213 z8798 to me according to that which 834 hath proceeded y3318 z8804 out x3318 of thy mouth; 6310 x4480 forasmuch 310 x834 as the LORD 3068 hath taken 6213 z8804 vengeance 5360 for thee of thine enemies, 341 z8802 x4480 [even] of the children 1121 x4480 of Ammon. 5983

 11:37 And she said 559 z8799 unto x413 her father, 1 Let this x2088 thing 1697 be done 6213 z8735 for me: let me alone 7503 z8685 x4480 two 8147 months, 2320 that I may go up y3212 z8799 x1980 and down 3381 z8804 upon x5921 the mountains, 2022 and bewail 1058 z8799 x5921 my virginity, 1331 I x595 and my fellows. 7464 z8675 y7474

 11:38 And he said, 559 z8799 Go. y3212 z8798 x1980 And he sent her away 7971 z8799 x853 [for] two 8147 months: 2320 and she x1931 went y3212 z8799 x1980 with her companions, 7464 and bewailed 1058 z8799 x5921 her virginity 1331 upon x5921 the mountains. 2022

 11:39 And it came to pass x1961 at the end 7093 x4480 of two 8147 months, 2320 that she returned 7725 z8799 unto x413 her father, 1 who did 6213 z8799 with her [according] to x853 his vow 5088 which x834 he had vowed: 5087 z8804 and she x1931 knew 3045 z8804 no x3808 man. 376 And it was x1961 a custom 2706 in Israel, 3478

 11:40 [That] the daughters 1323 of Israel 3478 went y3212 z8799 x1980 yearly 3117 x4480 to lament 8567 z8763 the daughter 1323 of Jephthah 3316 the Gileadite 1569 four 702 days 3117 in a year. 8141
